St. Peter in Gallicantu is the church where Jerusalem celebrates the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. On the vigil of the feast this week, more than a hundred people gathered here for Solemn First Vespers. Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, presided and in his homily spoke at some length on the writings of Pope Francis. He concluded the vespers with a final blessing, making use of the community’s relic of St. Peter himself. Fr. Jean-Glory, with the Oblate Sisters in our community here and the White Fathers in attendance provided the music for the other guests, members of various religious orders, people from the local Focolare community and other friends and associates of Gallicantu. Issa, the able and energetic cook here and master of many trades, oversaw the feast afterwards…which everyone seemed to enjoy, lingering here well after the official celebration. It was all a welcome burst of activity in what is still a lull in Jerusalem caused by the Corona virus. Hopefully, the pilgrims will be soon returning.
